Job profile for a Air Traffic Controller
There are basically 3 main areas in UK Air Traffic control Aerodrome Control Approach Control Area Control (National Air Traffic Services only (NATS)) Training can be conducted through NATS following an intensive selection process. Self sponsorship using a CAA approved college or Sponsorship through an Airport employer (Non NATS) and subject to a Class 1 medical certificate. Training is based on theory and simulator work with continuous assessments throughout. Not everyone has the aptitude and therefore success is hard to quantify. Following the college training you will be required to carry out a period of On the Job Training at your unit. Following successful completion of the 'Unit Training Plan' you will be required to attend a Unit Competency examination which is attended by the CAA. They will observe you working and then test your knowledge with a verbal examination. IF successful you will gain your License. This License is subject to an annual competency check similar to the CAA exam along with a minimum of 4 hours per year of Training in Unusual Circumstances (TRUCE).
