Job profile for a Consultant Clinical Psychologist

A Consultant Clinical Psychologist is a HPC registered clinical psychologist (applied/practitioner psychologist trained in working in health care settings normally via practitioner doctorate course) with a significant leadership role often including leading a team or service, providing and/or ensuring provision of supervision, training, consultancy, service development, audit/evaluation/research, governance and budgetary and managerial responsibilities, in addition to direct clinical service provision. Some senior academics hold Consultant Clinical Psychologists posts(substantive or honorary) in NHS organisations concurrently with university titles/roles. Consultant Clinical Psychologists are experienced senior clinicians appointed to roles that are assessed by BPS national assessors (the role and appointee are both assessed) as appropriate for a consultant-level grading, and are typically appointed on the Agenda for Change salary scale at 8c or higher. Not all Clinical Psychologists achieve, or necessarily aspire to, career progression to consultant level posts (with the consequent reduction in direct clinical work and increase in leadership/management responsibilities). Consultant clinical psychologists typically work in the NHS and may work in services such as (or subspecialities within)adult mental health, child and adolescent mental health, physical health, learning or physical disabilities, older adults, forensic, or (usually with additional qualification) neuropsychology services. The most senior Consultant Clinical Psychologists (e.g. head of service/department) may provide a leadership role across several specialties, or may work in corporate and advisory roles within a range of NHS and related organisations.
