Early Years Professionals are graduates who work alongside Early Years staff and other professionals (Nursery Nurses, management, social workers, child protection agencies etc) to improve provision in Early Years settings, and thus outcomes for the babies, toddlers and young children in their care, through effective implementation of the Early Years Foundation Stage. The job entails long hours for low pay (£14 -£16k is an average starting salary for an EYP with Professional Status), and the job involves dealing with difficult situations such as child behavioural problems, complaints from parents, and child protection issues. You have to be able to think on your feet, be approachable, creative, have common sense, and an absolute love for all children, regardless of gender, race, ability or behaviour. EYPs work in their settings as an "Agent of Change", recognising areas of practice that need improving, and motivating and working with staff in order to effectively bring about positive changes that benefit the nursery, the staff, the parents, but most importantly, the children.
