Job profile for a Principal Engineer

Overall Purpose of Job: Delivery of component and system engineering for projects. Main Activities/Tasks: • To plan, control, direct and execute component and system engineering development for vehicle programmes. • To provide expert input to business development activities including pre-contract contact with client engineering. • To further the development of technical capability through specific engineering initiatives. • To provide core technical expertise for specific systems across the range of current projects. • To provide leadership and task management for engineers and CAD designers engaged in projects. What is the level of accountability? • Principal engineers will be accountable for work delivered from their system groups. What are the budgetary responsibilities? • Project resource budgets for their staff (permanent and contract). • Outsourced engineering and materials for their project areas. What contact will the employee have with other personnel? • Depending on the nature of a project, Principal Engineers will be expected to interface with senior manage ment, Supplier staff and Industry Institutions. Detailed communications will be needed with other engineering project staff. What are the environmental/working conditions? • Office based. • The nature of project work will require travel to client and supplier sites. • Visits to Automotive test sites may be required that are specific to the system expertise.
