Job profile for a Trainee Clinical Psychologist

A trainee clinical psychologist is both a full time employee of an NHS trust and a full time post-graduate research student studying for a DClinPsy or equivalent. They are employed on the three lowest increments on the NHS band 6 pay scale (agenda for change)and do not pay a fee for their University study. Trainees undertake a number of clinical placements (3-6) supervised by qualified clinical psychologists. In a typical week trainees would spend three days on placement, one day in teaching and have one study day. Employment is conditional on passing all aspects of the course, both clinical and academic. Trainees often have to travel considerable distances to placements. Applications for posts are through the clinical psychology clearing house in Leeds. Competition for positions is fierce and requires candidates to demonstrate statistical knowledge and research skills as well as clinical competencies. Many successful candidates have higher degrees (MSc, Phd, MPhil) and/or a number of years experience but the minimum requirement is a good 2.i in Psychology and some relevant employment experience
