Job profile for a Visual Merchandiser

I create computer-generated layout plans for stores throughout the UK to guide shopfloor staff through the implementation of new display schemes and the presentation of incoming stock. My goal is to ensure brand consistancy throughout the company and that the right products are displayed at the right time in order to maximise sales. Previous instore role (VM - Fashion retail - ?17k): I managed the visual / commercial presentation of the store utilising company guidelines for window displays and the presentation of stock. I was responsible for maintaining standards of garment presentation along with 2 other colleagues, through leadership and the training of staff. P.S. I find that visual merchandising is highly unrepresented on career websites and that the job descriptions can give the impression of being a glorified shop assistant. In reality, the job is highly skilled and is becoming more and more relevant in todays economic climate. Not only do you have to be highly creative with a great eye for detail, you must be extremely commercial, have a cast iron grip on sales figures and monitor the outcome of every project you work on as you are accountable for its success. Also, knowing the company's goals, values, policies and procedures inside out is vital as a major responsibility of the job is training staff and floor managers to maintain everything you implement as you can't do it all alone! In addition, deadlines are always tight and expectations are extremely high, so the ability to handle criticism and work calmly under pressure is another essential quality that must be displayed in this role - which is an exciting and rewarding career choice! Although this is a personal account of my experiences, I hope it helps you to come up with a generally suitable description for the role of a VM.
