Merger

A merger refers to a situation in which two or possiblty more organisations group together and therefore everything is pooled.

It is a situation in which the management of both entities merging agree to the process and often two competitors merge to provide a larger but hopefully better company that can take advantage of things like economies of scale that are now available to them.

Note that in contrast an acquisition is where one body takes over the other.
