Lender of last resort

It doesn't sound like the most attractive of titles, being the "last resort", but who is the lender of last resort?

Well, this simply refers to the lender who underpins the bottom of the source of credit in a financial system. Therefore in the United States, the role is performed by the Federal Reserve Banks who ultimately supply the credit.
